Enkhjargal "Epi" Dandarvaanchig

{short description of image}

Mongolian Horse-Head-Fiddle ("Morin Khoor")

Over- and Undertone Throatsinging (Harhiraa" bzw. "Khöömii")

Epi was born in 1968 in Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia) and grew up in Altanbulag, a small village near the Russian border. From 1990 - 92 he studied music at the academy of music in Ulaanbaatar. His teacher was Professor G. Jamjan, the best and best known master of the Morin Khoor of Mongolia.

During his education Epi played with his first Morin Khoor Quintette in the Mongolian television and travelled with different national ensembles through the whole country to cultivate the traditional Mongolian music. Through the background of his family (Epi´s father moved to the countryside to raise horses, where Epi is involved, too) Epi is engrained to the traditional and nomadic way of life. In 1993 he first came to Germany with the Group "Altain Orgil", where he met Rüdiger Oppermann. The last nine years he played many concerts with him not only in Germany, but all over Europe and the USA. The last Concert tours brought him to the Swiss expo ´02, Gran Canaria, Madrid and Paris, to mention only a few. Beside of this, he is always a very welcome guest musician or singer for different projects: with Peter Götzmann he celebrates the Mongolian Hip-Hop, in duet with Rainer Granzin he shows his jazzy side. In these projects he improved his capabilities to improvise in, for him, new music styles and structures. Meanwhile he has a solo project with his own interpretation of traditional mongolian music. Alongside of many appearances on CD´s as a guest musician, he published his first Solo-CD "Hoirr Öngö" in 2002.

Epi, the "voice wonder" from Mongolia moves between cultures. With his playing on the Morin Khoor and the perfection of his singing (Over- and Undertone) he loves to merge his traditional mongolian roots with modern, westerly stamped music and improvisations. After a short time in his concerts he manages to bring the beauty and the fragrance of the Mongolian landscape to the audience.
